The Taste of Art team are pleased to be able to tell you that we took a large proportion of the Taste of Art 3 exhibits up to The Bowes Museum, Barnard Castle, County Durham at the beginning of the summer. Our pieces will be part of 'Royal Sugar Sculpture 600 years of Splendour', in the contemporary section! If you missed our exhibition in Guildford, here is another chance to see our unique style of sugarcraft. For more details, see the Bowes Museum site:

A wonderful exhibition that features the spectacular art of sugar sculpture was held at the Bowes Museum, Barnard Castle, this summer.

In the year of Her Majesty the Queen’s Golden Jubilee, 2002, the ‘Royal Sugar Sculptures: 600 Years of Splendour’ exhibition traced the development of European sugarcraft as a courtly art from the late medieval period, when sugar was a rare and much prized substance, to its popular revival in modern times.

By recreating a historic feast as well as showing modern pieces, the exhibition aimed to tell the complete story about sugarcraft. Many exhibits from  Taste of Art 3 were submitted to the gallery for selection early in May that year, and we

Vivien Reid, Exhibitions Officer at The Bowes Museum comments "The displays will provide a unique visual experience for the visitor, illustrating that sugar sculptures are definitely more than just decoration, they are an art form. By recreating an historic feast as well as showing modern pieces, the exhibition aims to tell a complete story about sugarcraft." Royal Sugar Sculptures: 600 Years of Splendour can be seen from 1st June 2002 until 22nd September 2002. For further information regarding this or any other event held at The Bowes Museum please telephone 01833 690606.
