Leopard skin on cakes
The Great Cake Bake on Wedding TV is out on line now http://www.weddingtv.com/tv-shows/1628/the-great-cake-bake/ which shows Elizabeth's winning cake and a close-up of the Leopard Skin Patterned Paste technique. This looks like being a very popular technique, so am thinking about adding it to the web-site soon. Meanwhile if you would like to know how it's done - email as usual.
Work in progress at the moment are two projects, 5 gift cakes featuring variegated leaves for Squires Kitchen Cakes and Sugarcraft Magazine using a technique from my booklet The Book of Patterned Pastes, and a cake for their Wedding Cakes Magazine with a new technique for making the Macintosh Rose Pattern. Watch out for the magazines in a few months!
(This Email message arrived recently from Penney Pang, so good to know the Patterned Paste techniques are getting the recognition internationally: "Hi Geraldine
Cakes and Sugarcraft Magazine issue 108 This magazine from Squires Publishing is out now and features two of my Patterned Paste projects, the animal skin handbag and the candy striped camellia.

The Great Cake Bake on Wedding TV Congratulations to Elizabeth Solaru for winning three categories in this competition, one of which featured a Patterned Paste Leopard Skin technique! For more of Elizabeth's work see her website www.elizabethscakeemporium.com
British Sugarcraft Guild newsletter See the December 2009 issue for pictures and article about 'Off The Wall', the exhibition of sugar art in West Molesey this summer.
Visit to Sweden Scandinavian Cake Show 29th 30th August 2009 British style cake decorating is gradually catching on in Scandinavia and 'Tart Decor' kindly invited me to demonstrate and run a workshop with a Patterned Pastes theme at their exhibition in Kungalv. This international exhibition is growing from strength to strength each year with a growing number of competitors of an increasingly high standard, and visited by hundreds of people interested in learning more about cake decoration. The whole weekend was great fun and afterwards I had time to explore the local beauty spots and taste the famous Princes Cake, an absolutely divine mix of marzipan and cream held together with a light fat-less sponge. Didn't need anything else to eat all day!
Network Richmond and West London Arts Magazine The editor commissioned me to write an article explaining how sugar is used as an art medium, which has just been published in the Autumn edition of Network, issue 50. It covers the old historic use of sugar for sculptural centrepieces, how royal icing can be adapted to be made into a permanent work of art, and how the very fragility of flower paste exhibits can enhance their attraction. Illustrated with images from 'Off The Wall'.
‘Off The Wall’ Tuesday 4th August – Sunday 16th August 2009 Exhibition of Sugar Art and Mixed Media The Fountain Gallery, 26 Bridge Road, East Molesey, Surrey KT8 9HA
The inspiration for this new show started with the wonderful collection of wallpapers held by the Victoria and Albert Museum which took me on a creative journey into new canvases and sculptures with sugar. Many of my works were carefully preserved to remain permanent works of art.
Opening times: Tuesday to Sunday (closed Mondays) 11.00am to 5.00pm
The Book of Patterned Pastes By learning just five basic techniques you can
create hundreds of patterns and effects, such as stripes, checks, dots and
circles, honeycomb patterns, reptile and leopard skin effects, multi-toned
petals and flowers including tulips, roses an carnations, and repeat patterns
for fabric and wallpaper designs. Once familiar with the five basic
techniques of patterning marzipan, sugarpaste and flower paste, creating your
very own unique patterns will be easy. The biggest advantage will be the time
saved adding colour and pattern to your sugarcraft projects, definitely the
techniques of the future for commercial work as well as the busy sugarcrafter
working from home. ‘The Book of Patterned Pastes’ is published by B. Dutton Publishing Limited, and is on sale at Squires Kitchen, 3 Waverley Lane, Farnham, GU9 8BB (opposite Farnham train station) telephone 0845 2255671or can be ordered on line http://www.squires-shop.com/ or through Amazon.
