Sugarcraft Workshops Workshops are ideal way of learning new skills, meeting other sugarcrafters and having a relaxing fun day, taking home your finished work to keep for future reference. If you would also like a more intensive cake decorating course with more specific skills perhaps a days individual tuition may suit you too. See courses for a list of suggestions.
Saturday 26th November 2011 Absolute beginners guide to covering a cake with sugarpaste and marzipan with a simple royal iced border and quick and easy flowers and leaves. A workshop in Tolworth, £45 per student with all materials included.
Learn how to prepare a cake for coating and how to roll out marzipan and sugarpaste properly to cover the cake for a beautifully smooth coating, and learn how to make a simple decoration of flowers and leaves. Try your hand at some royal iced piping and lettering to complete the day! Students are requested to bring some basic sugarcraft equipment with them such as a non-stick rolling pin and a non-stick board, all materials such as sugarpaste, marzipan, cake dummy, cake board etc will be included in the £45. You may also order a fruitcake to coat with an extra payment of £5. During the workshop you may use the skills taught to change the colours, side designs, and inscription to make a cake for Christmas or Birthday, or for a present! Workshops by Arrangement Creative Sugar Art Workshops can be great fun and an ideal way to learn Patterned Paste techniques or have a go at Sugar Art. These workshops can also be taken as individual tuition. Workshops can be arranged for groups of up to 20 students at a venue and time to suit, or for a small group of up to 3 students here in North-East Surrey. Generally speaking if you have coated a cake with sugarpaste, made a simple wired sugar flower and can make and use an icing bag, then one of these projects is for you All workshops are 5 - 6 hours unless labelled a half day, which are 2 - 3 hours long. Pink Cake with Spray of Jasmine and Rose Leaves A patterned paste cake with rolls and a colour wash, featured previously in Squires Magazine and 'Patterned Pastes'. 5 -6 hours
Leopard Skin Cake with Striped Rose. This unusually shaped Patterned Paste cake is decorated with a leopard skin design, always a popular look with customers, and a striped rose called Oranges and Lemons. Striped roses were popular in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and they have become very fashionable once again. Suitable for students who have had some experience making wired sugar flowers. Please bring your own rose leaves to add to the spray.
Gift Box Cake A patterned paste cake with spirals, stripes, and a small spray of striped sweet peas. 6 hours. Red Sugarpaste Cake with Textures. Using texture to create design with line, and with a little Royal Icing. Very free and creative, this uses sugarpaste in the most imaginative of ways. Shaped Cake with Folk Art Painting A shaped cake with painted carnations on a plaque using Folk Art painting techniques. A very unusual design which always surprises students as once the secrets are out it is quite easy to make. Christmas Cake with poinsettia patterns embedded in the paste and highlighted with a little embossing. A most unusual technique which can be adapted to show leaves and flowers representing all the seasons. A half day workshop.
Pictures Maiden Hair Fern. Royal Iced picture with a little rice paper and sugarpaste. Texturing, painting, embossing, and a technique for making Royal Icing diamond shapes View From a Devon Window. Royal Icing with flooded colours using a technique which is suitable for permanent display. Also try your hand at basic design using simple perspective and tone values. My Back Garden. Royal Iced picture with texture and simple piping. Work on the basic design and experience the use of a centre of interest, highlights, simple perspective and tone values.
Waves. Royal Iced picture with scrolls and barrels to form wave effects. Use of line to create movement; an exciting and liberating use of traditional piping techniques.
Striped Flowers Striped Tulip. As featured in the booklet 'Patterned Pastes'. Wired or unwired as required.
Roses with striped petals. As illustrated in booklet 'Patterned Pastes'. Use of 5 -petal rose cutter. This can be a half-day workshop to learn the techniques, or a full day to complete a small spray of these attractive flowers.
Patterned Paste wired bow made from flower/petal paste and arranged on a small sugarpaste cake. The same technique can be used to make folded and patterned leaves for a sugar flower spray. Very modern! This is a half-day workshop Sculptures Large leaf sculpture. Flower paste and Royal Icing, as exhibited at The Riverhouse Gallery in 'Eat Art' and The Fountain Gallery in 'Off The Wall'. This involves carving a former, some simple piping and air brushing to finish. Only suitable for small groups of up to 3 people. Sugar coated sculpture made from wire, paper, mod-roc and decorated with Royal Icing and granulated sugar. This is a 2 day workshop with a week in between each session as the model will have to dry out thoroughly before it can be decorated. Great fun, lots of mess, laughter and mucking in to help each other. Not to be taken too seriously! Only suitable for small groups of up to 3 people. Sugar bowl as exhibited in The Fountain Gallery as part of 'Off The Wall' and on the Table of Honour at Squires Kitchen's exhibition in 2009. Half day workshop.
